Highfield Canine Hydrotherapy is owned and managed by Sarah Hughes who has over thirty years experience of handling and owning dogs. She is a fully qualified Small Animal Hydrotherapise, with nearly 12 years of practical experience. Sarah currently has an English Springer Spaniel, Sheba, aged 12 years and a small flock of Jacob Sheep.

The introduction to canine hydrotherapy arose when, at the age of six months, Sheba became lame on her left hindlimb.  She was x-rayed and was diagnosed with Legg-Calve Perthes disease in her left hip joint.  The condition was caused by an impaired blood supply to the femoral head of the femur.  Sheba underwent orthopaedic surgery to remove the damaged femoral head, an excision arthroplasty.

It was suggested that hydrotherapy would be the quickest and safest way to promote limb movement and regenerate the wasted muscle that occurred within a short time after the surgery.  It was a difficult search to locate a local pool, the nearest being an hours drive from home.  Sheba swam twice a week and made a terrific recovery.

In September 2006, Sheba had a total hip replacement on her right hindlimb, as it had become arthritic and painful.  It was a difficult decision to make, but we are pleased with the success of the surgery and her subsequent recovery.  Sheba still swims twice per week.  She thoroughly enjoys her swims and looks forward to the next time.

Sarah saw the fantastic health and fitness benefits gained from hydrotherapy.  She realised the need for a professionally run, high quality canine hydrotherapy facility in Staffordshire and developed the business from the start, designing and building a bespoke canine hydrotherapy pool.  Sarah created Highfield Canine Hydrotherapy to serve the Midlands.

Sarah has the experience and knowledge to operate the canine hydrotherapy business to ensure Highfield Canine Hydrotherapy provides the very best treatments and care.
